The world of female hip-hop is at an innovative and thriving peak. More and more female rappers are in the spotlight and transitioning into mainstream hip-hop. More interestingly, female rappers with unique styles are the ones in the spotlight. Rico Nasty is one of those unusual artists. Her loud and bold style differentiates her from other artists, making her stand out and shake up the entire female rap scene.
Rico Nasty combines hip-hop and rap to create an enticing energy that makes you want to rage and feel like a total badass. While many male rappers have a rapper/rocker feel to their music, I have not heard any other female rappers deliver such a sound as Rico Nasty does.
In her songs like “Rage” and “Smack a Bitch,” she uses her signature loud and raspy voice to display her wild side and literally rage on the tracks. Just like classic rock stars, she tells us she’s here to do what she wants and doesn’t care who opposes. It’s enough to get any audience hype and even start a wild mosh pit.
“I don’t need your opinion, do what I f*cking want” -Rico Nasty, “Smack A Bitch”
Rico exudes confidence and an IDGAF factor that lets everyone know that this girl is not one to be played with. In hip-hop culture, which pressures women to conform to a certain body type, Rico Nasty rocks a less curvy figure like the baddie she is without tearing other women in the scene down. On songs like “Poppin’,” “Bitch I’m Nasty,” or “Pressin Me” she acknowledges that she is one of the baddest chicks and that she is in high demand.
If you’ve seen her you would most likely agree, being that Rico has an innovative signature style that many couldn’t pull off. The rapper tends to sport outfits that have a wide range of colors, patterns, and cuts. She accents her fabrics often with big and bold accessories like platform heels and dangling earrings. The most notable and eccentric aspect of her style is her hair. She has worn everything from wild curly hair to sleek mohawks. Many fans even noticed that on her latest album cover her hair is styled to read the album title “Nasty.”

Even though Rico can be loud and bold, she also has a playful side that is just as powerful. On songs like “Hey Arnold” and a few others, the rapper plays with melodies and even harmonizes to display her bubbly personality. These songs still have the sassy flair that fans know and love, but it’s delivered in a more lighthearted way.
While it might not seem like much for this animated rapper to be getting some stardom, it actually means a lot. Rico Nasty is pushing the boundaries for female rap and will hopefully break even more barriers in the future. Not only is she expanding the genre with her rare musical styles but she is also paving the way for black women in music (or really black women in general) not to be typecast into one category. She is not a ‘sex symbol’ or a ‘rocker’ or a ‘bad b*tch.’ She is all of those things and more. She is multidimensional and very talented. She also is a great example of how women, especially black women, can’t be put but into a box. Rico Nasty is one of a kind.
