HAS EVERYONE KNOWN ABOUT HAYLEY KIYOKO THIS WHOLE TIME AND NO ONE TOLD ME?
I’ve been missing out.
You know her from Disney Channel Original Movie Lemonade Mouth, but she’s anything but sour. You know her as Velma Dinkley, and it turns out in 2018, Velma’s an iconic bisexual pop artist on the rise.
The name Hayley Kiyoko rang some bells when I saw my peers raving over her as a “bi queen,” but I didn’t make the connection to her roles in Lemonade Mouth and the Scooby-Doo live action movies until much later.
Kiyoko’s been releasing music since 2013, and I’m honestly upset I didn’t find out about it sooner. I could have been blasting “A Belle to Remember” on repeat for the past 5 years.
I don’t even normally fawn over artists like Carly Rae Jepsen and Taylor Swift, but Kiyoko seems like strong competition for Jepsen and Swift on all you pop-lovers’ top album lists. Her album “Expectations” comes out March 30th, so prepare yourselves.
Probably one of her most explosive hits is “Girls Like Girls,” which is an absolute anthem, especially in the way of representation for the LGBTQ community. Her most recent release was the single “Curious” this past January, which has a slightly more mature and developed sound than her past releases.
In addition to acting and making pop music, Kiyoko directs and stars in her own music videos, like “Feelings” (2017) which depicts her pursuing the subject of her feelings, a girl swaggering through a colorful night scene. The video is fun and flirty, and beautiful. Her dance moves make you wanna move, and maybe kiss a girl or two.
I don’t know about you, but I’ll be spending February and March anxiously awaiting the new album with high “Expectations.”
